Question:

Read Aloud does not work.

Answer:

Here are some troubleshooting tips that may help:

  • Check to see that your network is allowing the file that is generated by the Read Aloud tool. In Preferences, click Read Aloud Preferences and scroll to the bottom of the page beneath "Change Your Default Settings". Choose the option "Listen to a pre-generated sample of each voice here". Select a voice from the drop down menu — if a voice plays the sample message, then your network is allowing the file to come through. If the sample voice does not play, then your network settings might be blocking that type of file from coming through (or your workstation settings/privileges might be blocking that file).
  • Check your bandwidth by going to "Preferences" in the yellow "My Tools" section to the right of your netTrekker screen, and click "Check the bandwidth of your connection here." Limited bandwidth at the school/facility may contribute to longer loading time for Read Aloud passages.
  • Review the FAQ's about Read Aloud.
  • You may have an "accelerator" toolbar associated with your browser. You may want to check to see if this is the case and remove it to see if it is preventing you from accessing the Read Aloud function.
  • Are all the speakers at the computers in question turned on?
  • Are you blocking any .WAV files?
  • How long has this been an issue?
  • Have you made any changes to your network recently?
  • If you use a Mac computer, you need to make sure the Quick Time preferences need to be set to "play automatically" for Read Aloud to work.
  • To enable Read Aloud with Firefox, we recommend that the user install Apple Quicktime.
