netTrekker Settings

The Administrator uses this tool to manage netTrekker settings for the active school. Your admin username is associated with a single school. You can access all of the schools in the district by moving your username to the desired school. To associate your username with another school, click Profile in the My Tools and select desired school in My School list.

The netTrekker Settings tool provides the following functions:

  • By default, netTrekker does not filter out Wikipedia results from all netTrekker results requested from the active school. The Admin can select to filter out Wikipedia on per school basis.
Wikipedia results can also be blocked on a per-search basis by using the Advanced Search tool. netTrekker does not include Wikipedia on our list of encyclopedias on the Reference page of netTrekker because its open source nature and resultant vulnerability to error offend many in the current education community. We value Wikipedia for its free access to information on a wide variety of subjects, its ad-free pages, accessible prose, and increasing content in many languages. We advise using it as one of several sources and incorporating its use into the teaching of information literacy.
  • By default, netTrekker does not filter out controversial results from all netTrekker results requested from the active school. The Admin can select to filter out Wikipedia on per school basis.
Controversial resources can also be blocked on a per-search basis by using the Advanced Search tool. Controversy is at the heart of all academic study and is a necessary element in netTrekker Sites that deal with controversial subjects, or which present controversial points of view are included, but their evaluations are marked with Controversial Icon to notify users before they access the site itself.
