21st Century Integration Model

Title: Life Cycles
Subject: Science
Grade Level: K through 2
See the Internet Scavenger Hunt,
a template for Student Project.

Lesson Summary

Beginning with the reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, this Teachers' Domain lesson discusses the similarities and differences in life cycles of insects and frogs. After watching and discussing the QuickTime video in their small groups, students discover the metamorphosis process. Students build a greater understanding of the butterfly life cycle, metamorphosis, by actively participating in an internet scavenger hunt on netTrekker.

Original Lesson Plan

Life Cycles of Frogs, Dragonflies, and Butterflies — www.teachersdomain.org/resources/tdc02/sci/life/cyc/lp_lifecycle/index.html

Original Objectives

  • To understand that all animals have a life cycle that includes being born, developing into an adult, reproducing, and eventually dying.
  • To understand that the details of life cycles vary from one organism to another.
  • To observe the changes that occur during the growth and development of insects and frogs.
  • To sequence the stages of life of selected animals.

21st Century Skills Integration Objective(s)

Students will demonstrate ICT Literacy skills by exploring selected sites in netTrekker.

Procedure

  1. Before lesson: Ensure that students have access to netTrekker. Make sure student's home page is set for elementary.
  2. Set up the classroom activity center: toilet paper tubes, tongue depressors, white construction paper, pipe cleaners, crayons, scissors, glue, and butterfly activity instructions.
  3. Lesson Extension: Pass out the internet scavenger hunt handout.
  4. Have students complete the internet scavenger hunt. Make sure they show their butterfly craft to you and turn in their handout after completion.

Assessment

Completion of internet scavenger hunt: Did student visit the correct sites in netTrekker? Did student correctly complete the questions? Did student complete in-class butterfly activity? Did student listen to and watch the metamorphosis song?
